Hebron on United Nations heritage list

The area includes the site known to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque.

Twelve countries on the world heritage committee reportedly voted in favour of the resolution presented by the Palestinians and strongly opposed by Israel.

The Palestinians hailed a UNESCO decision Friday to label the heart of the occupied West Bank city of Hebron a protected heritage site, but Israel called it a "moral blot". "This is a historical development because it stressed that Hebron and the Ibrahimi Mosque historically belong to the Palestinian people", said Palestinian Minister of Tourism Rula Maayah.

The site is holy to both religions, with Old Testament figures including Abraham believed to be buried there. "And it further discredits an already highly questionable United Nations agency".

"Jewish ties to Hebron are stronger than the disgraceful UNESCO vote", said Naftali Bennett, Israel's education minister and head of the country's national UNESCO committee.

Over the centuries, Romans, Jews, Crusaders, Mamluks and the British have conquered the city, which today lies in the southern part of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank.

There is frequent friction between the two populations.

Hotovely further added "the same automatic majority would also have passed a resolution that the sun rises in the west and not in the east. Israel will not surrender to historic distortion and will continue the fight against the bias of United Nations institutions regarding Israel".

Murad Samir al-Razam, 4, was run over in the center of al-Khalil, situated 30 kilometers south of Jerusalem al-Quds, on April 30.

Israeli officials, such as Michael Oren, deputy minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, have called on the Trump administration to leave UNESCO completely, and members of the Jewish community in Hebron reiterated that demand of Israel's historic ally on Friday. This resolution was ratified by UNESCO's executive board in May 2017.

It is the second holiest site in Judaism and the fourth in Islam. All six are considered the Patriarchs and Matriarchs of the Jewish faith.

The city is divided, in accordance with worldwide agreements, between Palestinian and Israeli control.

Meanwhile, Palestinians welcomed the decision.

In 1929, as a result of an Arab pogrom in which 67 Jews were murdered, the entire Jewish community fled the city, with Hebron becoming temporarily devoid of Jews. Many of the Palestinians involved in the current wave of attacks that began in 2005 came from Hebron.

Israeli and Palestinian rescue and security teams participated Wednesday in a joint drill simulating an emergency rescue exercise following a vehicle crash. It is the palestinian's latest attempt to erase Jewish history.
