Red Cross says emergency blood donations needed

Red Cross says emergency blood donations needed

The American Red Cross is making an appeal for blood and platelet donors as donations have fallen short of expectations in recent months.

According to the organization, they have received 61,000 fewer donations than what they need for their blood supply.

The shortfall is the equivalent of the Red Cross not collecting any blood donations for more than four days.

"Not all superheroes wear a cape, so you can be someone's hero today", said Alana Mauger, external communications manager for the Penn-Jersey Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross.

The slow down in blood donations is something that happens regularly. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

"For a first-time donor, drink plenty of fluids, and eat a good breakfast", said Red Cross blood donor Chris Hunt.

In Crawford County, a blood drive will also be held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday at AmVets Post 27 at 235 East Galen Street in Bucyrus.

The Independence Day holiday and summer vacation plans often impact donation numbers. Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce the time it takes to donate.

Anyone wanting to schedule an appointment to donate can do so through the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting the American Red Cross website or by calling 800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The Blood Bank of Delmarva is also in need of donations of all blood types, but especially O Negative, the universal blood type. "We're open during our normal business hours at all of our donor centers to make it as convenient as possible for people to donate", Director of Community Relations said in a release.
