IPhone 8 Fingerprint Sensor May Not Be In The Display

IPhone 8 Fingerprint Sensor May Not Be In The Display

The iPhone 8 is the only model that will seemingly feature a radically new look, with materials such as steel and glass and the presence of a wide, 5.8-inch screen that is supposed to cover nearly the entire surface of the phone.

According to KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo, dubbed the "best Apple analyst on the planet" by some, the iPhone 8 will not feature a Touch ID sensor or any fingerprint recognition capabilities.

The forecast is for the three handsets to be unveiled simultaneously in September, but the iPhone 8 could go on sale later than the 7s duo. The iPhone 8 will feature the highest screen-to-body ratio of any smartphone on the market thanks to a "notch" at the top of the screen and a virtual Home button. "Apple is reportedly in talks with LG Display to invest about KRW 2 to 3 trillion ($1.75-2.62 billion) into the South Korean display maker's new OLED production lines exclusively dedicated to Apple orders", the report says. That flies in the face of what the rumor mill has been maintaining, which is that the fingerprint scanner will be embedded in the display. The analyst also claims that the iPhone 8 will be offered in less colour options than the other iPhone lineup.

For example, he doesn't believe the full-screen display will work with current capacitive fingerprint sensors.

Because it takes in more data points, the report says, it's also said to be more secure than a fingerprint sensor. Additionally, he feels that the scan-through capabilities of an OLED panel are just disappointing even though it is thinner than an LCD panel.

These alleged iPhone 8 dummy units show how the device would look with a fingerprint reader on the back. The sacrifice has helped Apple avoid delays, Kuo suggested. No matter how fast and accurate Apple's 3D facial scanning is on the iPhone 8, a user still wouldn't be able to unlock the iPhone without lifting it up and pointing it directly at his or her face.
