RT America: Trump pledges 'federal help' to stop violent crime in Chicago

President Trump tweeted on Friday he will send federal resources to Chicago in order to quell the city's violence.

Authorities confirmed to The Chicago Sun-Times on Thursday that about 20 additional agents with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been sent to the city.

The group will join the Chicago Police Department and Illinois State Police on a strike force whose goal is to use ballistics technology to crack down on gun traffickers, as well as to get illegal guns and repeat shooters off the streets, per the AP.

The Crime Gun Strike Force, a permanent team of special agents, task force officers, intelligence research specialists, and ATF Industry Operations investigators who are focused on the most violent offenders, in the areas of the city with the highest concentration of firearm violence.

The president tweeted early Friday that crime in Chicago has reached "epidemic proportions", referencing the almost 2,000 shootings in the city so far this year.

Trump in January infamously threatened to "send in the feds" to fix Chicago's "carnage".

According to the Chicago Police Department, however, the number of shootings in 2017 so far is down compared to previous year.

Though the Chicago government and the city police have implemented a series of security measures, including beefing up the police force and buying back guns, not much has improved.

"More than just a new strategy or tactic, we are foundationally changing the way we fight crime in Chicago", Johnson said in a statement.

"Six months ago we made it clear that we would welcome additional federal support, and six months later we appreciate the 20 new A.T.F. agents that are now arriving", said Adam Collins, a spokesman for Mr. Emanuel, in a statement.

In fact, earlier this week, officials announced that the ATF had loaned the city a van outfitted with ballistic testing equipment to help police more quickly solve gun crimes. Last year, more than 60 people were shot and four were killed around the holiday. So far this year, there have been 320 homicides compared to 322 by this time last year, according to the police department.

Through Friday, 1,360 shootings had been reported in the city, about 200 fewer than during the same period in 2016.

He posted the news in a tweet. "They need to not be a sanctuary city, they need to be protecting the people of Chicago from violent criminals".
