Russian Federation says nearly 100% likely ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi dead

Russian Federation says nearly 100% likely ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi dead

The Russian Foreign Ministry has said it is "highly likely" that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL), was eliminated in an airstrike carried out by the Russian Air Force in Syria earlier in May.

"I think this information is close to 100 percent", Interfax quoted Ozerov as saying.

An air raid that Russian Federation claimed killed the leader of the Islamic State group has reportedly killed an elderly hay dealer and his extended family instead, an Iraqi intelligence official has told The New Arab.

Last week, Russia's defense ministry said it believes Baghdadi and up to 330 other ISIS fighters were killed in Raqqa when Russia-backed airstrikes hit the area on May 28.

Two Russian warships and a submarine in the Mediterranean have fired missiles at Daesh group targets in Syria, the defence ministry said on Friday.

"According to information which is being checked through various channels, the leader of ISIL Ibrahim Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi was also present at the meeting and was eliminated by the strike", it said.

The US-led coalition killed Fawas Muhammad Jubayr al-Rawi, a financial facilitator of Daesh, in an airstrike in the Syrian city of Abu Kamal last week, Operation Inherent Resolve said in a press release on Friday. Washington DC said it could not corroborate the death and Western and Iraqi officials have been sceptical. "We certainly would welcome the death of al-Baghdadi, but we do not have any definitive proof to lead us believe that this is accurate".

The ISIS leader's death has been reported on multiple occasions over the recent years, with no possible confirmation of his demise.

The U.S Department of State has designated Baghdadi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).
