Will uphold dignity of Presidency: Kovind

Asked why his party is supporting Kovind and not Congress leader Meira Kumar, who is a Dalit leader from Bihar and the Opposition nominee, JD (U) leader KC Tyagi said, "We are supporting Kovind due to his conduct as the Governor of Bihar".

Meira Kumar's candidature was announced on Thursday.

Nitish Kumar has been repeatedly reminded by his partners to back Meira Kumra, who also hails from the same state but the Bihar CM has made it clear that he is going to support Ram Nath Kovind in the upcoming presidential election. He would meet Bihar Chief Minister on Friday and urge him to review his decision.

NCP Chief Sharad Pawar told the gathering that in his entire political career, he had never heard the name of BJP's Presidential candidate Kovind.

The rift between Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav was apparent, though the two leaders sat next to each other there was no exchange of words, or smiles as they sat through the iftaar party for an hour.

"There is no doubt about the result". We have a lot of respect for "Bihar ki beti".

"Even I am proud of Bihar ki beti".

The JD-U, however, has refused to change its decision but said it was an "isolated" case.

"They are saying we finalized the Presidential candidate without consulting them". He exhorted the Telangana MPs to cast their vote as per their conscience.Opining that the presidential election was not a competition between two people, Jaipal Reddy said former Speaker of Lok Sabha Miera Kumar was a honest person and a spirit of Constitution. They have made me the nominee. "He had worked in Bihar without any bias".

If you thought the battle is being fought only to decide on the next occupant of Rashtrapati Bhavan, you are reading your politics wrong.

RJD Chief Lalu Prasad, who rushed from Ranchi after a court hearing, said that being a Bihari, his choice was Ram's daughter Kumar. "The opposition candidate is better than the candidate announced by the government", Yadav told ANI.

"She (Meira Kumar) has been the Speaker of Lok Sabha, having knowledge on external affairs matters and above all the daughter of Jagjivan Ram", Reddy pointed out. A united ruling alliance headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had put up Ram Nath Kovind, a strong candidate, while the fractured Opposition was groping in the dark in search of a credible consensus candidate.

In her speeches, Kumar has said that the country's sustainable growth is not possible without ending the centuries-old exclusion of marginalized groups such as scheduled castes and tribes. "Had the BJP agreed on it, we would have supported him". After the announcement, Gandhi would appeal to all parties to back Kumar, hoping that other opposition parties will join her.
