Head Coach Luke Walton Wants LaVar Ball to Slow Down

Head Coach Luke Walton Wants LaVar Ball to Slow Down

The Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves upstaged the barrage of freshmen - including Markelle Fultz to the Philadelphia 76ers at No. 1 and the Los Angeles Lakers taking Lonzo Ball (and his provocative father, LaVar) second overall - by executing a league-rattling trade that sent superstar small forward Jimmy Butler to Minnesota.

Lakers coach Luke Walton opted for a different word: "Genius".

"This is insane", Ball said in a phone interview.

The Lakers also don't appear anxious about attaching themselves to LaVar Ball, the voluble family patriarch with aspirations of building a global sports empire around his three talented sons, one $495 pair of sneakers at a time.

"I'm gonna tell you what: Alonzo Ball is going to take the Lakers to the playoffs his first year", LaVar, wearing a Big Baller hat in Laker colors, said in a television interview.

"Welcome to the team Lonzo Ball".

"I'm a very optimistic person, but I don't look that far into the future", Walton said during a season ticket holder event at L.A.'s practice facility, via ESPN.com. I couldn't ask for anything more.

Ball, a 6ft 6ins point guard from Anaheim who broke the UCLA record for most assists in a season, was selected by the Lakers with the second pick. "All I can do is go out there and play". "Without putting too much pressure on a young 19-year-old, we all know there are players that have played in the league-the Steve Nashs and the Jason Kidds-that have had that ability to make others around them better, and of course Magic Johnson being the North Star for everyone". According to Zo, his dad's been great.

Ball receives comparisons to Jason Kidd for his offensive abilities.

While he did average more minutes (22.6 vs. 28.1) and sported a higher usage rate (22.1 vs. 22.6) from his freshman to sophomore year which led to higher averages in points (11.9 vs. 12.6) and rebounds (5.8 vs. 6.6), his efficiency took a big hit.

What draft grades would we give the Lakers for their 2017 NBA Draft class? He is also a capable playmaker and passer. Bryant declared for the NBA Draft with two years of eligibility remaining.
