Handel first female GOP rep elected to Congress in Georgia

Although the race was widely seen as a referendum on the new President, many observers think Republicans did a better job tying Ossoff to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Her victory over Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia's 6th Congressional District means Republicans held all four of their seats that were up for grabs in special elections this spring.

The California Democrat has always been a bogeywoman Republicans have used to motivate their base and to woo independents as the personification of liberal values and a reminder of why even if they may like their individual member or candidate, a vote for that Democrat would be a step toward putting Pelosi back in the speaker's chair.

The outcome of Tuesday's special election has only aggravated the internal divisions dogging the Democrats since President Trump's election and intensified the charged debate about where the party should go - and who should lead it there.

Tuesday's special congressional elections in Georgia and SC provide teachable moments for Texas Democrats.

Another factor that put this race on the map - and the reason so much money was spent on it in the first place - is that many people view it as a proxy for the failure or success of President Donald Trump's administration. "And we need to also lift up this nation so that we can find a more civil way to deal with our disagreements".

If the only message of the Democratic Party centers on Donald Trump, they're hanging their hopes on a wildly unpredictable, unstable individual.

Overall, Wasserman found, Democrats outperformed the voting tendencies of their districts by 8 percentage points in this year's special elections, a good omen for 2018 even if they did not win a single one of the open seats.

But all is not necessarily lost for Democrats. "It's clear, that I think, across the board in the Democratic Party, we need new leadership". One of his closing ads focused on Handel's role in cutting funding for Planned Parenthood during her time as an executive of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity for breast cancer.

According to CNBC, President Trump sent several tweets in support of Karen Handel's congressional candidacy, stating that the former Georgia Secretary of State would "fight for lower taxes".

To note the significance, Handel also shared a story from the campaign trail of meeting a young girl who the Congresswoman-elect said had been following the race.

Last night, however, Handel beat Ossoff by 3.8 percent.

Karen Handel declares victory. The most prominent and effective hit on the Democratic candidate was to tie him to the congresswoman from San Francisco.

The result is that, going forward, Republicans will hold a 241-194 majority in the House.

Democrats must defend their current districts and win 24 GOP-held seats to regain a House majority next November.

Rep. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee that invested millions in the race, argued in a memo to lawmakers, "Despite the loss, we have a lot to be proud of" and "we have a unique opportunity to flip control of the House of Representatives in 2018".

In fact, the California support may have come back to bite Ossoff.
