UN envoy plans new round of Syria talks in July

UN envoy plans new round of Syria talks in July

Meanwhile, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Monday that a fresh round of intra-Syrian talks would begin in the Swiss city of Geneva on July 10.

Since a resumption of negotiations past year, there have been multiple rounds brokered by the United Nations in Geneva between representatives of Syrian rebels and the government of President Bashar al-Assad, resulting in scant progress.

It also said Mr de Mistura plans to convene further rounds of talks in August and September.

The US welcomed the ceasefire announcement and called on the Syrian government to live up to its ceasefire commitments.

"The United States will continue to support constructive efforts to de-escalate the violence in Syria and ensure humanitarian aide reaches those in need", the statement reads.

Deraa is among the areas included in a "de-escalation zones" deal brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey earlier this year.

Deraa is a major front line in the conflict.

Syrian regime has pursued a series of so-called "national reconciliation" agreements with rebels in different parts of the country, including recently near the capital.

The ceasefire on Saturday marked the beginning of the seventh round of negotiations in Geneva.

Syria has declared a 48-hour cease-fire in the southwestern Daraa city, starting as of 12 noon local time (0900GMT) on Saturday, the Defense Ministry said, Anadolu reported.

The independent London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the same day that the cease-fire seemed to be holding.

The ceasefire comes as western and Russian officials are trying to restart parallel peace talks to end the civil war without handing an advantage to strategic rivals.

"The regime's forces have stopped their military operations after big losses in equipment and men since the start of their campaign over a month ago. after the failure of repeated attempts to advance", he said.
