Pentagon chides Russian Federation over 'unsafe' intercept of USA spy plane

21 de junio de 2017, 09:31Moscow, Jun 21 (Prensa Latina) A Russian SU-27 fighter plane reportedly chased away a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation F-16 fighter jet that tried to approach Russia " s Defense Minister " s plane over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea.

A Russian Su-27 plane chased away the F-16 fighter jet, according to TASS news agency.

The Russian pilot of the Su-27 was provocative and flying erratically alongside the U.S. RC-135, Fox News reported.

Russian jets intercepted US planes flying too close to its coast during the exercises, but Tuesday's incident is the closest planes have come to each other.

A plane carrying Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu was buzzed by a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation F-16 fighter jet as it flew over the Baltic Sea, but was chased away by a Russian military jet, the TASS news agency reported on Wednesday.

The Shahed 129 drone was "showing hostile intent" to USA coalition forces on the ground, according to a US defense official. US officials report that the majority of these encounters have been "safe" and "professional".

Shoigu on Wednesday was flying to Kaliningrad, a highly militarised Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, to take part in a meeting with defence officials there.

Russia, a close ally of the Assad regime, said its surface-to-air missile systems would track "all kinds of airborne vehicles, including aircraft and UAVs of the global coalition detected to the west of the Euphrates River" as targets.

Earlier this month, Russian Federation scrambled a fighter jet to intercept a nuclear-capable U.S. B-52 strategic bomber it said was flying over the Baltic, in an incident that had echoes of the Cold War.

A pair of polish F-16C Block 52+ fighter jets, including one with conformal fuel tanks, fly over the Baltic Sea in June 2017.

Baldanza stressed that the American reconnaissance plane "did nothing to provoke" the Russian jet's behavior.

On Monday, a Russian #Jet flew hazardously near a USA observation aircraft in the skies over the Baltic Sea, adding yet another occurrence to a developing rundown of heightening exercises among Moscow and Washington.

USA aircraft are often intercepted near the Baltics and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, but the Pentagon says most of these are deemed to be safe and professional. The plane was reportedly escorted by a pair of Su-27s, and the F-16 fighters were scrambled, claiming the plane with the DM on board was not identified and they were trying to make a "visual" identification.

Russian Federation has also deployed nuclear-capable ballistic missiles to Kaliningrad, an enclave surrounded by Poland and Lithuania.

A North Atlantic Treaty Organisation official later said in a statement that the alliance "can confirm that three Russian aircraft, including two fighters, were tracked over the Baltic Sea earlier today (Wednesday)". This comes on the heels of the warning from Russian Federation yesterday that they will target US jets flying in Syria.

The Russian pilot reacted to the maneuver and then continued to escort the reconnaissance plane until it changed its route and flew away from the Russian border, it said.
