Paris Police Shoot, Wound Hammer-Wielding Assailant Outside Notre Dame

Paris Police Shoot, Wound Hammer-Wielding Assailant Outside Notre Dame

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the attacker cried "it's for Syria" as he went after police officers. The attacker's condition was being evaluated.

The commotion began after a man allegedly hit a Paris police officer with a hammer.

According to police, the individual shouted that the attack was committed in retaliation for French policy in Syria and called himself a "caliphate warrior" of Daesh terror group, outlawed in Russian Federation.

Ikken, 40, used a hammer to attack the police officer, who suffered slight injuries, and was found to be carrying kitchen knives. He said authorities were working to verify the card's authenticity.

The attack was an "isolated act", he said.

France had been through many terror attacks for the past two years.

Prosecutors confirmed the area would remain on lockdown until police were confident there was no further threat.

The incident happened around 4:30pm.

Earlier, the French police successfully responded to an incident near the Notre Dame cathedral and advised the public to stay away from the area.

Images on social media showed people inside the cathedral with their hands up.

Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nancy Soderberg was among the hundreds of people trapped inside the cathedral after the attack, the AP reports.

"It was really scary".

"From what we understand, there was nobody else", he said. Police have not released his name.

Armed police sealed off the area. The situation, according to CNN, has been brought under control. "I thought he was dead".

Kellyn Gorman, an American tourist, said: "I was about to come inside [the cathedral] and heard the noise, the gunshots, turned around and saw the assailant on the ground where they had shot him".

One tourist inside Notre Dame posted on Twitter: "Not the holiday experience wanted".

Soderberg tweeted a photo from inside the Notre Dame showing those locked inside putting their arms in the air as instructed by police.

"We will remember this for the rest of our lives", she said.

President Emmanuel Macron has announced he will create a special task force to better coordinate the fight against terrorism.
