ICE seeks custody of El Salvador man accused of murdering Muslim teenager

ICE seeks custody of El Salvador man accused of murdering Muslim teenager

Nabra Hassanen was walking with some friends to McDonalds early Sunday morning between Ramadan prayers when 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres got into an argument with a teen in their group who was riding a bike.

A Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization criticized police on Tuesday for settling too soon on road rage as motivator and said the killing should be seen in the context of a rise in hate crimes targeting Muslims across the country.

The Council on American-Islamic Affairs (CAIR), an Islamic civil rights organisation, urged USA police to "conduct a thorough investigation of possible bias motive in [Hassanen 's] case, coming as it does at a time of rising Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate attacks nationwide". He doesn't know us. It starts at 7 p.m. Martinez Torres is being charged with murder. Proving a hate crime in court requires showing overt bias, that a person was motivated, for instance, by the victim's religion, ethnicity, national origin or gender. Martinez Torres later chased the group down with a baseball bat in a parking lot before abducting Hassanen in his auto.

The girl, a member of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, went missing after she was walking with friends in the area of the ADAMS mosque in Sterling around 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. Sunday.

Mohammad Alsalti is a 23-year-old who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

According to Fairfax County Police, an investigation determined she was walking with friends and got into a dispute with a man driving a auto, who exited his vehicle and assaulted the victim.

Even so, they continue to probe the case and would revise their initial assessment if evidence of a hate crime is found, they have said. Police have described it as a road rage incident and say there's no evidence to suggest it was a hate crime.

Robert Spencer, author of the Jihad Watch blog, noted the incident was already being paired by CAIR with the Finsbury Park attack in the United Kingdom as examples of anti-Muslim hate crimes on the rise.

The LA Times did nearly exactly the same thing. No charges have been filed in the case, which remains under investigation. Federal prosecutors in Northern Virginia have not opened an investigation at this point.

"Such incidents send shock waves through the entire community and have the potential to make communities feel unsafe and vulnerable", said Doron F. Ezickson, the Washington D.C. regional director for the Anti-Defamation League. It is a time for us to come together to pray and care for our youth.

The Washington Post was perplexed as to why the police were not investigating the murder as a hate crime: "On Monday, they did not release any explanation as to why they weren't investigating the murder as a hate crime". The Anti-Defamation League called on police to investigate the incident as a hate crime.

The FBI and the Department of Justice opened a probe to determine if the case was a hate crime.

Hassanen's father disputed the idea that his daughter's death was road rage, telling the Guardian, "He killed my daughter because she is Muslim".

Abas Sherif, a spokesman for the victim's family, said Nabra and all the other girls in her group were wearing Muslim head coverings and loose Islamic robes when the driver approached. He caught up with Hassanen, who tripped over her dress, and hit her. Hassanen, who was 16 or 17 years old, was no longer with the other teens when they ran back to the mosque.

He said the media has an agenda to promote positive news about illegal-alien "DREAMers" like Torres, and anything negative that comes to light about them is quickly covered up or glossed over. We know there was a lot of misinformation circulating, but we ask for your patience as we work diligently to share the facts rather than speculation.
