Who Came Out On Top In The Weekend Box Office?

Who Came Out On Top In The Weekend Box Office?

The second "Cars" movie didn't do as well as the first in North America over its full theatrical run, but the films' box-office results reflect the growing clout of markets overseas.

The animated film, starring Owen Wilson, Kerry Washington, and Armie Hammer, has earned $53.5 million (£41.9 million) during its opening weekend (17-18Jun17).

Cars 3 is racing towards a stellar opening weekend debut and could reach as high as $60 million by the time the weekend is done.

Yet "Wonder Woman" continues to show strength in its third weekend of release, bringing in an additional $40-plus million to capture the #2 spot at the domestic box office.

The Tupac Shakur biopic entitled All Eyez On Me opened in third place with $27 million, opening in 2,471 theaters for an impressive $10,947 per-screen average. Two other new movies, "47 Meters Down" and "Rough Night", placed fifth and seventh, respectively.

Jillian Bell, Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Saldana, Ilana Glazer, and Kate McKinnon's raunchy comedy "Rough Night" had a rough start at just over $3 million from 3,162 locales on Friday. Despite awful reviews, there was still an audience for this (the Notorious B.I.G. biopic opened to $20.4 million back in 2009) and they showed up. Whether or not Wonder Woman can reach $1 billion worldwide remains to be seen though. In fact, many people thought the movie would flop at the box office. The film is now on pace for just under $52 million, but analysts believe a late Father's Day surge could propel it to the high $50 million range if not over $60 million.

Underwater thriller 47 Meters Down started with $4.3 million on Friday, a relatively disappointing number when you look at the similarly themed The Shallows from past year, which started out with $6.8 million.

Lionsgate's Codeblack Films partnered with Lionsgate on the movie, which was released on what would have been the iconic rapper's 46th birthday. The top 5 was rounded out by The Mummy with $13.9 million and newcomer 47 Meters Down with $11.5 million.
