Trump turns back the clock with Cold War Cuba U-turn

It reopened for the first time in more than 50 years in July 2015 under the Obama administration, and it was then one of the many changes that took place when the USA, with help from the Vatican, began to reopen diplomatic relations with Cuba.

On the other hand, Trump did not close down the USA embassy in Havana, which Obama re-established in 2015, nor did he cancel US flights and cruises to Cuba.

It said President Obama's openings towards the island nation had been seen as a recognition of the failure of the previous approach - rather than a "manifestation of goodwill of individual politicians".

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez made the comment during a speech in Vienna on a visit aimed at strengthening relations between Cuba and Austria.

The free flow of information, ideas, art, culture and sport stemming from increased opportunities for American travel and trade will be largely closed down by the new directive - entirely based on the questionable logic that somehow eliminating these opportunities for citizen to citizen engagement is good for the Cuban people. US travelers to Cuba are likely to be subject to greater scrutiny by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on their return to the United States. -Cuban relations is also a domestic political folly on the part of the president. Mr. Trump's new measures mainly relate to stricter enforcement of existing laws that had begun to loosen as Mr. Obama sought a rapprochement. Despite his many domestic achievements, he had failed to bring peace to the Middle East and couldn't stop the Russian invasion of Crimea or the civil war in Syria.

Presidents who have been successful in achieving their foreign policy goals sometimes are described as having a doctrine.

Polls showed that most Americans - even many Miami exiles - agreed that the US embargo on Cuba was outdated.

If anything, a hardening of USA policy on Cuba will prevent reforms and empower those who warned that the US could not be trusted as an honest partner. Nearly everything he has done proves that he doesn't give a damn about democracy in Cuba or anywhere else. There is no reason to keep Americans from going where they please. He has praised the rulers of Russia, Egypt and Turkey, and visited Saudi Arabia without uttering a word of criticism of that country's oppression of women or minorities.

Trump's vow to keep the broader decades-old US economic embargo on Cuba firmly in place drew criticism from some USA farmers, especially growers of corn, soybeans and rice.

Addressing a crowd of anti-Castro Cuban expats during a trip to Miami, Florida, last Friday, President Trump charted a course of more confrontational relations with Havana.

Trump vowed Friday to overhaul his predecessor Barack Obama's deal to restore ties with Cuba. "Full unpredictability became the only predictable quality of the American foreign policy long ago". He does not believe that we have enemies only because we create them.

Among those with Trump as he announced the policy in Little Havana were Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart. Trump tweeted a picture of the two lawmakers working to develop the new Cuba policy, part of what the White House said was extensive consultations with Capitol Hill. The group did not include USA agricultural exports to Cuba in its estimates.

Surrounded by Cuban-American exiles and Cuban dissidents, Trump announced from a theater in Miami that the USA would impose new limits on US travelers to the island and ban any payments to the military-linked conglomerate that controls much of the island's tourism industry.
