Fire Mueller? Don't even think about it

(Trump has "no intention" of firing Mueller, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said last night).

With few exceptions, Trump's allies are urging him not to move to dismiss Mueller, which would be both politically and technically complicated.

If Mueller knew he was going to be named special counsel, it is unlikely he divulged that information to Trump.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in separate testimony Tuesday that there was no "secret plan" to fire Mueller, nor was there cause.

Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller, said on Tuesday: "As long as I'm in this position, he's not going to be fired without good cause".

"I did not talk to the president about the issue", Ruddy said. Even though it is reported that the president understands how risky firing Mueller will be, those close to him feel that Trump is "so volatile they can not be sure that he won't change his mind if he finds out anything to lead him to believe the investigation has been compromised". "The best advice would be to let Robert Mueller do his job", he told reporters. The interview took place several days before Rosenstein picked Mueller as special counsel for the Russian Federation probe, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the interview, which was first reported by PBS.

Trump has the power to unilaterally remove Mueller from the job, but legal experts argue that would create a crisis in American institutions.

The revelation came after Ruddy was at the White House on Monday for a meeting with Chief Strategist Steve Bannon.

The interview was first mentioned by Trump friend and Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy in an interview on PBS' "NewsHour" Monday evening.

"I think that he should be more cognizant of making sure that the people who come to work with him are non-partisan, for his own credibility", Bennett said of Mueller.

Ruddy told ABC News that he stands by his comments that the president is considering asking Rosenstein to terminate Mueller. Rosenstein said Tuesday that Mueller has his full backing to conduct an independent investigation. Trump, who isn't typically shy about leveling criticism, especially on Twitter, hasn't commented on the longtime former Federal Bureau of Investigation director. The person demanded anonymity to discuss strategy on the sensitive matter.

Donald Trump is in way over his head, and his presidency looks like it is living on borrowed time.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told reporters Tuesday that he had confidence in Mueller and called reports that Trump might fire Mueller "rumors".

Even so, Gingrich said, Trump won't seek to dismiss Mueller because he's confident the probe will conclude he's done nothing wrong.

Still, Spicer's remarks irked Ruddy, who says he should not have been asked to release a statement saying that he never spoke to the president because he never claimed to have spoken with the president about Mueller.

The Justice Department declined CBS News' request for comment.

The White House again Monday refused to say one way or the other whether there was a tape.
