Vermont to join US Climate Alliance

Vermont to join US Climate Alliance

Tillerson is downplaying the significance of Trump's decision to withdraw from the global agreement.

He said that India would get billions of dollars for meeting its commitment under the 2015 Paris Agreement along with China and gain a financial advantage over the US.

"Just because the USA got out of a club does not mean we are not going to care about the environment", the Indian-American senior diplomat said on Saturday. "And if the Paris agreement was something that works for them, that they can achieve, they should do that", Haley said.

Republicans are largely optimistic about the economic benefits of leaving the climate agreement, with more than three-quarters saying Trump's decision will help the economy and 73 percent saying it will create more jobs like those in traditional energy than it will cost in the renewable-energy sector.

When asked why the United States pulled out of the climate agreement, Haley blamed former President Barack Obama for agreeing to regulations that were "too onerous", too strict and ultimately unachievable. The regulations were unattainable.

"I don't know in which circumstances he gave the statement but I hope that the United States will rethink the issue", the Minister said.

China's president Li Keqiang said fighting climate change was a global consensus and an worldwide responsibility.

"We are committed to the environment and this commitment is 5,000 years old". We know that we have to be conscious of it.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the EU's most powerful leader, pledged "more decisive action than ever" to protect the climate after Trump's "highly regrettable" decision. She should continue doing her part.

America is already about halfway to meeting that target, in large part because cheaper, lower-carbon natural gas has replaced coal in many U.S. power plants. We're going to continue encouraging other countries to do what they think is in the best interests of them.

Peduto said he was joining a coalition that intends to uphold the Paris Agreement called Mayors for 100% Clean Energy.

President Donald Trump does believe in climate change and that humans have a role in it, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley told CNN's Jake Tapper in an interview on "State of the Union".

Some state governors and city mayors were quick to claim the mantle of USA leadership in fighting climate change.

Trump's top climate adviser Scott Pruitt was indignant: "The world applauded when we joined Paris".

"We've done that in the past".

He added: "We do not intend to slow down".
