Trump Under Investigation for Obstruction of Justice

The White House has said Donald Trump "has no intention" of sacking the special counsel investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote in his tweet.

The news came the same week as Trump friend Chris Ruddy floated the possibility that Trump would fire Mueller, who was appointed to head up the investigation after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Comey would not say in his testimony last week whether he thought the president sought to obstruct justice but added it would be up to special counsel Mueller "to sort that out".

He is interested in a number of possible incidents, including one, previously reported on by the Post, in which Trump asked Coats to intervene with Comey to end the investigation into former National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn.

In his dramatic appearance before former colleagues, Sessions also contradicted a contention made by former FBI Director James Comey at a hearing before the same panel last week.

The Senate on Wednesday approved a bipartisan amendment that in part requires a congressional review process should Trump move to either ease or lift sanctions on Russian Federation.

The revelation led many to believe Trump was planning on firing Rosenstein from the Justice Department, or that the deputy attorney general had possibly refused to fire Mueller on Trump's behalf.

The FBI's denial in disclosing the memos is seen as a violation of the federal Freedom of Information Act, the lawsuit claimed. "I have never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election in the United States", Sessions told members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence during a hearing on Russia.

But a veritable mountain of circumstantial links has emerged - ranging from Trump's friendship with GOP operative Roger Stone, who has links to Russian hacker Guccifer 2.0, to former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was sacked for lying to administration officials about a secretive pre-inauguration phone call with the Russian ambassador and was later revealed to have taken Russian money.

But even with the Comey testimony, the Republican base remains supportive of the president, with 81 percent of GOP voters polled by Politico saying they approve of Trump's performance.

Rosenstein is in charge of hiring and firing because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation probe. His tweet Friday seemed to walk that back, suggesting the president instead acted on Rosenstein's recommendation, rather than his own personal beliefs.
