World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) June 15th

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) June 15th

During the month of June, state Rep. Dan Beiser, D-Alton, will be raising awareness about the dangers and problem of elder abuse during Elder Abuse Awareness Month. The free screening will take place at 1:30 p.m. on June 20 and is open to the public.

The different forms of abuse include psychological, financial, neglect, physical or sexual abuse. This intimate story reveals a hidden crisis harming older Americans in every community across the country. Last year, she added, hear office investigated almost 850 incidents of reported elder abuse, a number that she anticipates will be higher this year.

With the incidents of elder abuse on the rise, health care professionals are encouraged to try to speak to the older adult person alone if they notice unusual bruising or if the caregiver is domineering and answering questions for the individual, she said.

Sadly, even in metro city Bengaluru, 70% of elders said they had experienced abuse and mistreatment in public spaces.

"Ultimately, we want Harris County to be a community where it's safe to grow old", HCPS said.

Also during fiscal year 2014-15, Salavantis said, there were 24,413 reports of suspected abuse statewide, a 21.3 percent increase from the previous year.

The City of Edmonton also hosted an event to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. "Most people react really well if you approach them in a non-confrontational way and say 'I'm really anxious about you, I saw, ' That way that person is engaged in their own support system".

"The objective [of the event] is awareness and education to the community and specifically to the population that would potentially be victims of abuse", said Kimberly Hawkins, Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman with Kerr- Tar Area Agency on Aging. She said a lot of people don't report elder abuse.

"Our message this year is to make people aware that there is a thing called elder abuse and to let people know we are a confidential service".

We do not often talk about it openly or publicly because we simply do not think much about them or take them seriously.

Elder abuse may cause physical injuries ranging from minor scratches and bruises to broken bones and head injuries leading to disability to long-lasting depression and anxiety.

"All of us can and must be prepared to be advocates for older people if this abuse is ever to be halted". "Are we showing them the proper respect?"

"When they're going into homes to assist people, particularly seniors and they have to go out with an emergency", McDonald said.

It included a panel discussion on financial elder abuse, where representatives from financial institutions in Edmonton discussed warning signs and resources available to support victims of abuse.
