PM Modi, Pak PM Sharif exchange greetings at Kazakhstan's Astana Opera

PM Modi, Pak PM Sharif exchange greetings at Kazakhstan's Astana Opera

In a rare and unprecedented development, Chinese President Xi Jinping who held talks with Prime Minister Modi on Friday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana, did not hold talks with Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif. "Terrorism is a major threat to humanity". All members described India's accession to SCO as historic and said it would strengthen security and promote regional cooperation among member countries.

"It is impossible to find a solution until all SCO members make concerted and coordinated efforts to fight the menace of terrorism, including radicalization, recruitment, training and financing of terrorists", PM Modi said at the summit which was also attended by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

"The expansion will undoubtedly help the SCO become a more powerful organization". "It is also important to ensure inclusivity and sustainability", the Prime Minister said.

President of Afghanistan Muhammad Ashraf Ghani, President of Belarus Alexandar Lukashenko, President of Mangolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were also present during the summit.

Asian rivals India and Pakistan on Friday formally joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a security bloc spearheaded by China and Russian Federation, despite bilateral tensions bubbling over Kashmir.

The two Chinese nationals were kidnapped last month from Quetta in Balochistan and were later brutally murdered by alleged Islamic State (IS) militants.

India plans outreach to SCO through International North-South Transportation Corridor and linking that with intra-Central Asian corridors. As SCO members, India and Pakistan troops may jointly take part in anti-terrorism exercises, which is an irony considering that their membership of Saarc has done little to rein in terrorism.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of China Xi Jinping, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambayev, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev - welcomed the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, according to a press release posted on the website of the regional organisation.
