Northam beats Perriello in Democratic primary for Governor

Northam beats Perriello in Democratic primary for Governor

Gillespie, who has led in almost every poll since announcing his campaign past year, has taken a more calculated approach toward Trump, tepidly offering support for controversial positions like the immigration ban while keeping a distance for much of the campaign. He is a lobbyist, which one of his opponents, Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, never fails to bring up.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginians are set to head to the polls Tuesday to pick a Republican and Democratic candidate in the closely watched race for governor.

The Democratic primary, one of just two gubernatorial races this year, was quickly examined in national press coverage as an early indicator for the party's political climate and future ideological leanings after an unexpected defeat last fall and the long and fraught primary between Hillary Clinton and Sen.

Northam will face Ed Gillespie in the general election.

The lieutenant governor and the former congressman have few policy differences and share a similar liberal agenda on many issues. He said his priorities are affordable health care and education, and he has introduced a plan to make community colleges and workforce training free for what he calls "new-collar" jobs in high-demand fields like health care, cybersecurity and skilled construction trades.

Perriello ratcheted up attacks on Trump ahead of Tuesday's vote, calling the primary the "firewall against the hate and bigotry of the administration".

Northam is a more traditional candidate who stresses his pragmatic approach and ability to work with Republicans.

"Politicians have to be straightforward", Northam said. The Democrats have three candidates for Lieutenant Governor but only Justin Fairfax and Susan Platt have a chance of joining Northam on the November 7th ballot.

The historical trends are also on Democrats' side. But two 2016 Sanders supporters lost in recent special congressional elections, and other backers of the Vermont senator narrowly lost bids to chair the California and national Democratic parties. Many says that the environmental destruction caused by the pipeline's construction could hurt the region's growing tourism industry, which brings in almost $1b a year to the region and has grown by 53% over the last decade. (Perriello has since apologized for the vote.) His record is strongly pro-gun, and he once boasted of his "A" rating from the National Rifle Association.

"It is time for us to get back on offense and stop playing so much defense", Northam said.

Drawing a further contrast with Northam, Perriello has campaigned heavily against the Mountain Lake Natural Gas pipeline.

Gillespie vows to pursue "timeless conservative principles", including a 10 percent cut in state income tax rates. He has said he would be focused on creating economic opportunity and security for the middle class by helping small businesses thrive and expanding workforce development. That not only gives Republicans a serious advantage in the policy sphere, it also is likely to demoralize Democrats on Election Day - potentially swinging the result.

On Tuesday, he barely defeated Corey Stewart, a former Trump state campaign chairman who made preserving Virginia's Confederate history a top campaign issue.

And Kaine, as Clinton's vice presidential running mate, attacked Trump on all fronts during the campaign. Gillespie is a conventional GOP candidate who is charisma-deficient.

Ultimately every election is about turnout, who can mobilize their voters to the polls, and who has a hard time getting out the vote.

Ed Gillespie, Senior Adviser for the Romney Campaign, speaks to the crowd on stage during Mitt Romney's campaign election night event at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center on November 6, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts. On the campaign trail, he has largely avoided talking about Trump, who has not weighed in on the race.
