4-year-old dies of 'dry drowning' days after swimming trip

A Texas 4-year-old drown almost a week after the last time he went swimming, and now his parents are trying to prevent other children from suffering the same fate.

A silver lining has appeared in the death of a 4-year-old boy who died of dry drowning days after he went swimming.

Days later, the 4-year-old exhibited stomach bug symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea. They evidently performed CPR on the boy to no avail, as his lungs were said to be already filled with fluid.

She said she shies away from terms like dry or secondary drownings.

Medical experts said symptoms of dry drowning include trouble breathing, persistent coughing, sleepiness and fatigue, and vomiting. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), boys are more at risk for dry drowning, as is children ages one to four.

Grover said dry drowning is rare, but it's best to be overcautious since dry drownings are risky when they do occur.

Doctors will perform an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

Francisco suddenly reopened his eyes a few hours later: "He just woke up, suddenly. Maybe he needs his mama's touch", his mother told KTRK, describing medics' attempts to resuscitate her son. He said "Ahhh." He breathed a last time and I did not know what to do, "says Francisco Delgado Jr., his dad".

WebMD said only about 1 - 2 percent of drownings happen from dry drowning or secondary drowning. In secondary drowning, the little bit of water gets into the lungs and causes inflammation or swelling that makes it hard or impossible for the body to transfer oxygen to carbon dioxide and vice versa.

"If you have any concern whatsoever, the best thing to do is err on the side of the caution and take that loved one to the emergency department", Waters said.

Dry or secondary drowning occurs when someone breathes water into his or her lungs.

He advised parents to be aware of the symptoms and seek medical care if they suspect a problem.

"He had so much life to live", the page says. "He was loved by so many people ... the world lost a lovely soul".

KTRK reports that services for Frankie have been set for this Saturday, June 10. The world lost a attractive soul, ' a statement on the page reads.
