USA urged to act upon its own human rights

USA urged to act upon its own human rights

"It's hard to take Ambassador Haley seriously on USA support for human rights in light of Trump administration actions like the Muslim ban and immigration crackdowns", Jamil Dakwar, director of the human rights program at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), told Reuters.

Later Wednesday, Haley met with Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Ramallah, her office said in a statement.

Her visit follows a speech delivered Tuesday before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which Haley threatened to leave if it does not cease disproportionately targeting Israel.

"I have never taken kindly to bullies, and the United Nations has bullied Israel for a very long time", she claimed.

"If the Human Rights Council is going to be an organization we entrust to protect and promote human rights, it must change", said Haley.

Haley is the first U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations ever to visit the Human Rights Council.

The 47-member Council adopted five "biased" resolutions on Israel and the Palestinian territory at its March session, but never even considered a resolution on Venezuela, she said.

Prime Minister Netanyahu stated, "Thank you for all your help and standing up for Israel, standing up for the truth, which is standing up for America".

"The United States is looking carefully at this Council and our participation in it". "We have an ancient Hebrew saying that when somebody tells a truth, you can feel it".

She named Venezuela, Cuba, China, Burundi, and Saudi Arabia as not upholding the highest standards despite their membership and said that the forum was becoming "discredited" like its predecessor body, the Human Rights Commission. "I think it makes a world of difference, both for Israel and the U.S".

The US ambassador seemed very keen to make up the most of her visit, telling Rivlin that she looked forward to "taking in the history, the beauty and the tradition that all come with the magic of Israel". I think they know they can't keep responding in the way they've been responding. "They sense that the tone has changed", she said.

During her three-day visit to Israel, Haley is expected to fly over the country's northern and southern borders in a helicopter, visit Tel Aviv and lay a wreath at Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial center.

She further accused the Council of a "relentless, pathological campaign" against Israel, in part due to a controversial provision in the Council's agenda that singles the country out for censure and has drawn criticism from US Republicans and Democrats alike.
