Live charts show awesome power of Cape storm

Live charts show awesome power of Cape storm

South Africa's Weather Service said the storm, expected to hit land at about 2000 GMT, could also dump more than two inches of rain in some areas and make waves of up to 12 meters (yards). On Wednesday, authorities urged residents to capture rain from the storm in containers for flushing toilets and other needs. "Flushing an average toilet could save nine litres per flush depending on the type of toilet".

"Very high and rough sea conditions with possible storm surges are also very likely along the entire coast of the Northern and Western Cape, which will experience the brunt of the damaging waves".

The chart below, from the South African Weather Service, shows the position of the low-pressure system and associated cold front as of midnight on Wednesday morning.

"Residents living in informal settlements will probably be the hardest hit", Charlotte Powell, Cape Town city's disaster management spokeswoman said.

"Eight people have died so far in storm-related incidents and thousands have been displaced", said James-Brent Styan, spokesman for the Western Cape local government ministry. "Outside they should tie down their belongings because we are expecting abnormally strong winds‚" she said.

"We are afraid of situations where children are going to be caught in flash floods".

"In order to see a real big difference, we will need at least three consecutive winters of above-average rainfall", the City said.

The Western Cape disaster management operations centre put its specialised technical rescue team on standby last night to carry out water-related rescues.

Due to severe weather, the Western Cape Education Department has taken a decision to close all schools in the province.
