Justin Trudeau dines with Barack Obama in Montreal

Justin Trudeau dines with Barack Obama in Montreal

The former U.S. President and current Canadian Prime Minister dined at Liverpool House following Obama's speech to the Montreal Board of Trade. Obama and Trudeau later tweeted that they discussed ways to get young leaders involved in their communities, and they released photos of them inside the restaurant. "Thanks Barack Obama for your visit & insights tonight in my hometown", Trudeau published on his Twitter account. According to the Obama Foundation Twitter account, they met to discuss "their shared commitment to developing the next generation of leaders".

During the speech, Obama took a page from Michelle and trashed Trump without ever saying his name, citing a "temporary absence of American leadership" and praising US mayors and governors for upholding the Paris climate change agreement on their own.

The rock star treatment they got outside the restaurant proves it.

"In periods like this, people looking for control and certainty - it's inevitable", Obama told the Canadian audience in a thinly-veiled warning about President Donald Trump.

While some said it was all a show for those who'd been craving for a Trudeau-Obama reunion.

"In Paris, we came together around the most ambitious agreement in history to fight climate change", he said. "An agreement that even with the temporary absence of American leadership will still give our children a fighting chance".

Freeland rejected numerous USA president's policies, including the withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, imposing protectionist trade policies, and closing the nation's doors to refugees. Trump argues the climate agreement has disadvantaged the USA and benefited other countries, leaving American businesses and taxpayers to absorb the costs.

Touching on his successor's recent moves, Obama also said that despite the "temporary" lack of US involvement in the Paris climate deal, companies in America and around the globe have pledged to move toward renewable resources.

And while Trudeau and Macron's budding relationship gave us a much-needed break from partisan political headlines, the photos were tinged with nostalgia and bittersweet memories of the North American bromance that had seemingly faded away.
