Cleveland fires 1 officer, suspends 2nd in Rice shooting

Cleveland fires 1 officer, suspends 2nd in Rice shooting

Cleveland Police Officer Timothy Loehmann fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was holding a toy gun, at a city playground after responding to a 911 call two-and-a-half years ago.

Officer Timothy Loehmann was sacked for submitting inaccurate details on his job application, and not for the shooting of the African-American boy who was playing with a toy gun when he was killed.

It was also announced on Tuesday that Garmback was suspended for 10 days without pay for a "tactical error" in his approach and for not reporting the incident correctly.

Garmback suspended for using "improper tactics" when driving up to the gazebo near which Rice was shot.

The Cleveland Police Department announced it dismissed Officer Timothy Loehmann.

Loehmann was sacked for inaccurate details on his job application, not for the Rice shooting.

"What we don't see.is any mention of accountability for the people at the city who permitted Loehmann to become an officer to begin with", Subodh Chandra, an attorney for the Rice family, was quoted as saying by local NBC affiliate WKYC-TV.

The decision came after what Mayor Frank Jackson called an "exhaustive process" of investigation.

The police union representing the officers planned a news conference later Tuesday.

Last April, the City of Cleveland settled a $6 million dollar lawsuit in the case.

The shooting sparked outrage and became one of many acts of police terror that galvanized a movement for Black lives in the US against police brutality and murder.

Rice's mother, Samira Rice, said Tuesday she is relieved that Loehmann was sacked but believes Garmback should also have been terminated.

Two officers were disciplined in 2015 for failing to thoroughly check Loehmann's personnel file before he was hired.

Tamir Rice had been playing with the pellet gun in a park on 22 November, when a police cruiser pulled up close by. A grand jury declined to indict Loehmann or Garmback.

"This has been tough on our entire community, and definitely on the Rice family", Police Chief Calvin Williams said. "There's a 12-year-old kid dead", Willisams said. Samaria Rice, Tamir's mother, said in a statement.

Garmback and Loehmann were both on administrative duty when they were notified of the disciplinary measures Tuesday morning.

He claimed to have left the Independence, Ohio police department "for personal reasons".
