Wood strikes as England reach Champions Trophy semi-finals

England booked their place in the Champions Trophy semi-finals with an 87-run win over New Zealand in Cardiff.

New Zealand were unchanged from the side that played in a frustrating no result washout against Australia in their first group match.

"Jake Ball takes the new ball today, hopefully he goes well".

Mark Wood took the crucial wicket of Kiwi captain Kane Williamson, who had made 87 and seemed to be taking his team to victory.

Put into bat at a blustery Swalec Stadium, England set the Black Caps 311 to win - their 23rd score over 300 since the 2015 World Cup - before bowling them out for 223 in 44.3 overs. For NZ, skipper Kane Williamson top scored with 87.

Williamson's essay was studded with eight boundaries as he and Ross Taylor (39) stitched together a 95-run stand for the third wicket, the highest of the match.

The result ensures England progress to the last four and means they can afford to lose their final Group A encounter with arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday (June 10).

By now, England is ruling group A in Points Table with two points followed by Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand respectively.

'England bowled very, very well, ' said Williamson, who was fined 40 per cent and his team 20 per cent of their match fees for a slow over rate in England's innings by the International Cricket Council.

Plunkett (4-55) bowled handy spell in the end along with Adil Rashid (2-47) to dismiss New Zealand for 223 runs.

England, who are the table toppers having registered a comfortable eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the opening match at the Kennington Oval, will look to clinch second successive win to seal the semi-final spot in the eight-team marquee event.

The No.3 accumulated a solid fifty from 66 balls without ever dominating and was undone by a snorter from Mark Wood which bounced off his gloves to the keeper.

Alex Hales and Joe Root made up for the loss of Roy with an 81-run partnership, during which Hales brought up his half-century.

James Neesham (180), Neil Broom (11) and Correy Anderson (10) tried hard to dig New Zealand out of the trouble but their contributions were not good enough.

However, the opportunity to dump the Aussies will be irresistible for England captain Eoin Morgan's men. Buttler also stitched 54-run stand for the fourth wicket with Joe Root before the Kiwis picked up wickets at regular intervals to put brakes on England innings.

"I think we can", he said, referencing England's victory over South Africa in Leeds two days after the first attack at the Manchester Arena last month.
