Nine states join Cuomo's climate alliance

In response to President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Accord, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and California Gov. Edmund Brown Jr. formed the United States Climate Alliance with the goal of reducing emissions 26-28 percent from 2005 levels and meeting or exceeding the targets of the federal Clean Power Plan.

At least 10 states and a slew of US cities have signaled that they are committing to the Paris climate accord despite President Trump's decision last week to withdraw the USA from the pact.

Conversations with New York, Washington, and MA specific to the goals of the U.S. Climate Alliance occurred throughout the day on Friday. What the Climate Alliance ends up doing will determine if the actions taken count as an impermissible interstate compact.

This new coalition will be called the United States Climate Alliance, and the three states that form it account for more than a fifth of the United States' population.

In December 2015 in Paris, world leaders signed the first global commitment to fight climate change.

As a member in the alliance, Minnesota is committed to sustaining climate programs, promoting the sharing of innovations and best practices with other member states, and implementing new programs to help reduce greenhouse gases in all areas.

The Trump administration's announcement undermines a key pillar in the fight against climate change and damages the world's ability to avoid the most risky and costly effects of climate change.

Beyond the state participation, several of the country's largest corporations have also announced their intention to hop on board the alliance train.

"I am proud to join this bipartisan group of governors and reaffirm Vermont's commitment to fighting climate change through the U.S. Climate Alliance". The global agreement, reached past year by 195 countries, aims to reduce the greenhouse gases emissions that are driving climate change.
