Army convoy attacked: Congress urges Centre to negotiate with Pak

The attack took place near Hillar village when the convoy was heading to Srinagar from Jammu.

Earlier in the day, militants attacked an army convoy leaving six army men injured.

Officials told The Indian Express said that the suspected militants opened fire on the convoy when it was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu.

Panic gripped Wuzur and adjoining villages when the firing was followed by a "cordon and search" operation. One jawan was killed in the attack while five others were injured, defence sources said.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat called on Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra in Srinagar and discussed the internal and external security management issues in the state.




The Srinagar-Jammu highway was immediately shut for the vehicular traffic, reports said.

He quoted operational commander Mehmood Ghaznavi as saying that the outfit has chose to reward the militants involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility for the attack. He also said that the militants involved in the act would be given "cash rewards" and warned of more such attacks in coming days.

Exhorting all the soldiers deployed in the Valley, the Army Chief reassured them of the entire nation's pride and support for their endeavours. In the incident, five Pakistan soldiers were reportedly killed while some others were injured. The agenda of the meeting was to review the situation in the hinterland and borders.
