China's Li: fighting climate change is 'global consensus'

China's Li: fighting climate change is 'global consensus'

This comes just after German Chancellor Angela Merkel openly questioned the reliability of the U.S. as a partner given various policy differences with the White House.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that Germany must expand its partnership with China at what she described as "a time of global insecurity".

Uncertainties in global political and economic situation are growing, while at the same time the trend of peace, development and cooperation as well as economic globalization is irresistible, said Li.

Germany is the first stop for Mr Li on a European tour that comes amid growing concern in Germany over some of Mr Trump's policies, especially on climate change and protectionism.

"We are both ready to contribute to stability in the world", the Chinese premier told reporters, echoing comments made by Merkel who said Germany should expand its partnership with China at such a time.

"China will stand by its responsibility", he said, adding that Beijing would keep working with worldwide partners to address the problem of climate change.

Yesterday, world leaders affirmed their commitment to combating climate change.

Russian Federation joined the chorus speaking out in favour of the climate accord. A senior Chinese official said China is determined to open up and reach a deal, which seen as a forerunner to a possible future free-trade accord. "Russian Federation attaches great significance to it", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Britain would continue to press the U.S.to reduce unsafe emissions even if Trump pulls out. Mr Johnson told Sky News that Britain still wants the USA to take the lead in fighting climate change and called on individual U.S. states to keep making progress on that front.

"We are going to show them that implementing our targets is very positive for the economy, very positive for developing sophisticated technological advances and it is very positive for the welfare of the citizens", he said.

Trump, who wants to promote USA coal industry and U.S.jobs, has resisted calls by many allies to stay in the Paris agreement, which aims to shifting the global economy from fossil fuels to cleaner energy.

The Chinese Premier is on a two-day official visit to Germany for an annual meeting between the two heads of government, a mechanism that has been in place since 2004. "If you don't have a country who emits 28 percent of worldwide emissions (in the accord) you can not be efficient".

Merkel said she wanted European Union talks with China on an investment deal to make quick progress and that this would be a precondition to any free trade deal negotiations.

Ms Merkel also tackled civil rights, saying she and Mr Li had resolved the issue of German political foundations working in China which she said were crucial for a stronger civil society.

Chinese Premier Li praised enhanced ties with Germany, and said they had common views on many issues, including respect for worldwide law and opposition to unilateralism.

"We will step up our measures against the global climate change and will also continue to participate in the multilateral process concerning climate change".

Merkel and Li met hours ahead of Trump's decision on whether to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate accord.
