Texas state lawmaker says he received racist calls after House floor scuffle

The Texas State capitol building hosted a fiery stand-off Monday as lawmakers allegedly exchanged violent threats after a Republican legislator called immigration officials on protesters at the building. Senator's Rinaldi sentiments have only gone to fuel the division state Rep Ramon Romero Jr. having reiterated that the only thing he sees in a crowd are "illegals". It aims to prevent municipalities and police departments from holding back on cooperating with federal authorities that want to enforce immigration law.

"What's fantastic now, in the Trump era, some folks feel emboldened to say these racist remarks toward these members", Texas Democratic Party Deputy Executive Director Manny Garcia said.

Nevarez told CNN that physical altercations should never happen on the House floor, which is why he challenged Rinaldi to bring the heated discussion outside. Bernal said it was the result of the simmering tension between House Democrats and Republicans over the SB4 vote. Rinaldi said that he told Nevàrez he would "shoot him in self-defense" if Nevàrez acted on the perceived threat.

Rinaldi admitted in a Facebook post to calling ICE and claimed he threatened to shoot Nevarez in self-defense only after Nevarez had threatened him first.

Rinaldi has sought to defend himself reiterating that he only called the ICE on protesters who held posters in the gallery saying "I am an illegal immigrant and here to stay".

Rinaldi then said that another Democratic representative, Ramon Romero "physically assaulted" him, then "Poncho told me that he would "get me on the way to my car", something Rinaldi says he later repeated. "I am now under DPS protection", he said.

Rinaldi claimed he called ICE on protesters at the Capitol on Monday.

"The Texas legislature has spent the last 140 days of legislative time passing the most racist, xenophobic agenda that I have seen in my lifetime", Roberts said.

"There was a threat made from Representative Rinaldi to put a bullet in one of my colleagues' heads", Rep. Justin Rodriguez said at a news conference held shortly after the scuffle.

Rinaldi also added that he is now under protection from the Texas Department of Public Safety and that several other lawmakers witnessed the incident.

Later it was learned State Rep. Matt Rinaldi, R-Irving had threatened of shooting by the end of the disrupted session.
