Nest's New Camera Can Tell the Difference Between Intruders and Your Kids

Nest's New Camera Can Tell the Difference Between Intruders and Your Kids

More new hardware is in the works after the IQ, according to a report in Bloomberg from March, including a new home-security alarm system, a digital doorbell and a cheaper version of Nest's smart thermostat.

Nest has announced the new Cam IQ indoor security camera that brings a bunch of new features to the table when compared to its predecessor.

The Nest Cam IQ also features a speaker and microphone, making it possible to have a conversation with children when they come home from school, or to pacify the dog if it starts barking when left alone, or to warn an intruder that they should leave immediately.

The Nest Cam IQ also features facial recognition capabilities, which means it can distinguish between known family members or friends and strangers and notify the owner accordingly. With a $10-a-month Nest Aware subscription, they can enter their names, and the next time a person appears on camera, a smartphone alert will identify them.

Remember that Nest smart (er) camera that leaked out a little over a week ago? The aim with the Cam IQ, Veron says, is nothing short of being the "best in class security camera". The cameras are expected to ship at the end of June. Those in the UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland can preorder today for €349 European Union, and Nest says preorders will start in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Spain from June 13th. The Nest Cam IQ uses a 1/2.5-inch, 8-megapixel sensor that's capable of 4K video, paired with a 130-degree lens.

The device and app will then inform you whenever a familiar face appears in view - including their name - or let you know if an "unfamiliar" person is in view. If it determines the person is a stranger, the 4K image sensor is put to use as the camera zooms in for a close-up, snaps a shot of the intruder and sends that to the homeowner. There is absolutely no ability to record video without the monthly fee, though you can view pictures from the last three hours, and the camera will still send you alerts. We also like that the USB power socket has moved from the camera to the base, which should mean you can easily reorientate the camera without the cabling get in the way. A pair of 940nm infrared LEDs provide night vision without the telltale red glow that's typical of other security cameras.

The Nest Cam IQ also includes speakers 7 times more powerful than those on its original camera, as well as 3 microphones to help suppress noise and echoes for clearer sound.

This functionality is free but the "familiar face" feature costs extra.

The company's marketing director spoke to The Verge, saying, "I am very excited about the next six months, we'll talk again soon and you'll understand why".

The Nest Cam IQ offers a number of improvements over the Nest Cam Indoor, even without a subscription.

Still, the buzz at the Google I/O conference two weeks ago was that after a bumpy 2016 when Nest lost its cofounder and CEO Tony Fadell, sales are growing as products launch in new countries and other channels in the US.

And with Nest Aware, customers will also benefit from existing features, including 10- or 30-day video history that you can browse in seconds using Sightline, clip and timelapse creation and sharing, and Activity Zones with automatic door detection for even more precise notifications.
