JetBlue flight makes emergency landing after battery fire

JetBlue flight makes emergency landing after battery fire

FAA officials say a JetBlue New York-to-San Francisco flight from JFK was diverted to MI due to a lithium battery fire from a passenger's laptop.

Ford Airport said airport fire crews responded, but that the fire was out before the plane landed around 8 p.m.

"I was stunned", said passenger Kat Honniball. The flight crew extinguished the fire, and emergency crews were able to remove the damaged equipment after the plane landed. Airport spokeswoman Tara Hernandez says the plane took off about 8:50 p.m. and continued the flight to San Francisco.

No injuries were reported and airline officials say there was no terror threat on the domestic flight.

"I didn't know if it was a device on fire or the plane on fire because they didn't tell us anything", passenger Alan Honniball said. It's not clear what type of device caught fire.

A very small percentage of lithium-ion batteries ever catch fire or explode - but as battery-powered devices become pervasive, that very low percentage begins to add up into a startling number of fires. Last year, Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphones were banned from flights after reports of the phones catching fire.

The Trump administration's laptop ban has been in place since March and covers non-stop flights to the U.S. from 10 airports located in eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has said the ban might expand to all worldwide flights entering or leaving the US.

Wednesday morning, the flight from NY landed safely in San Francisco - its initial destination.
