'Passionate' UK Zookeeper Killed by Tiger in 'Freak Accident'

'Passionate' UK Zookeeper Killed by Tiger in 'Freak Accident'

Tributes have flooded social media for Rosa King, the zookeeper who was killed yesterday by a tiger at Hamerton Zoo.

The zookeeper was identified as Rosa King, 34, and the woman's mother told the UK Press Association she had worked at Hamerton Zoo Park for 14 years.

"It sounds like a tiger turned on her", said Pete Davis, who was visiting the zoo with his family. A full investigation is underway, the zoo said. The zoo was evacuated as a precaution but officials said the public was never at risk and the tiger did not escape at any point.

The park is home to four tigers: Bengals, Shiva and Mohan as well as two Malaysian tigers, named Cicip and Sahaja, whom the zoo opened a new enclosure for in July previous year.

Zoology student Philip Caso, 20, from Peterborough, knew her through work experience and posted on Facebook: 'Rosa loved and respected those animals to the point where each and every one was like a child to her'.

King died at the scene when she was attacked at 11: 15 a.m. local time, police said.

Authorities and the zoo have not detailed how King and the tiger came to be in the same space at the same time. "It was heartbreaking seeing (other zookeepers) trying to help", she wrote.

He says these animals retain their natural instincts even if they have spent all their lives in captivity, so while a fatal encounter like the one at the Hamerton Zoo is tragic and unfortunate, Hanna says it is hard to place the blame on the tiger.

The statement said staff were too distressed to speak to reporters.

The park was closed on Tuesday. The tiger has not been put down and was unharmed.

King looked after the carnivores at the zoo, a 25-acre park which is home to Malaysian and Bengal tigers according to its website.

"A tiger had entered an enclosure with a keeper".
