Keys ends 4-match losing skid with Paris win

Keys ends 4-match losing skid with Paris win

Hsieh had to dig deep after Konta got off to a flying start, with the Briton winning 13 of the first 15 points and going on to take the first set in just 26 minutes. Konta has yet to win a match in Paris in three main draw appearances and explained after today's result: "I think I probably came out of the blocks a bit quicker than she did".

- The match was del Potro's first at Roland Garros since 2012, when he lost in the quarter-final to Roger Federer.

Following her remarkable form everywhere else in the world she was seeded seventh for this tournament.

A loose bag of unforced errors saw Konta broken, immediately break back and then allow Hsieh to snatch the advantage back for a second time.

In the men's draw, third seed and 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka defeated Slovakian qualifier Jozef Kovalik 6-2, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 to reach the second round yesterday.

Having won just five points in seven previous Konta service games, Hsieh should have broken at 4-3 but netted a routine smash with the court at her mercy.

Su-Wei will face American Taylor Townsend in her next round match.

"It's not really easy to play the seed in the first round: They play all the big tournaments, they are very positive, their mental is very tough, their body is big and strong", Hsieh said. Finally, there was someone under age 30 playing his best (and winning) a Masters 1000 who didn't have the last name Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic.

The tide was turning as Konta then had to save a set point to force a tie-break.

Del Potro showed no sign of the shoulder and back problems that hampered him at the Lyon Open last week and did not face a single break point.

Good start at the Roland Garros for Elina Svitolina.

His best result at the French Open was reaching the semifinals in 2009, just months before he won his Grand Slam title in NY.

And so on Tuesday morning Konta was expected to make light work of the unseeded Su-Wei Hsieh in the opening round on Court Philippe Chatrier, a player ranked more than 100 players below the British number one in the WTA rankings.
