Trump makes first visit as president to Arlington National Cemetery

And though Trump addressed Gold Star families collectively on Memorial Day, he has yet to apologize to the Gold Star family he treated so horribly months prior.

The president participated in the somber, annual observance at Arlington National Cemetery. Andrew Byers, whose family attended the ceremony.

On Monday, Trump also made special mention of former Sen. The son of the retired four-star Marine general, Marine 2nd Lt. Robert M. Kelly, died in 2010 after he stepped on a land mine while on patrol in Afghanistan.

The remarks of Defense Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman James Dunford, who stood with the president, were also appropriately distinguished and moving.

Among those laid to rest in Section 60 is Robert Kelly, son of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.

Before joining the Trump administration, Secretary Kelly served as the top Marine commander in Iraq.

Trump walked among the white marble headstones and greeted families who were at the cemetery to remember the nation's war dead.

"As we honour the fearless warriors who gave their lives for ours, spending their last moments on this earth in defence of this country and of its people, words can not measure the depth of their devotion, the purity of their love or the totality of their courage", Trump said.

And after President Trump refused to endorse the Paris accord on climate change over the weekend, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Europe could no longer rely on the US, but says she is still committed to try to strengthen ties.

President Donald Trump paid tribute on Memorial Day to the men and women who have died in combat, saying they "all share one title in common and that is the title of 'hero'". Bob Dole of Kansas, who sat in the audience at the ceremony, thanking Dole for his service in World War II. John Kelly's other son, Johnny, is preparing for his fifth military deployment. And Kelly's son-in-law Jake is a wounded warrior.

Trump called on Americans to look into the eyes of people who had lost loved ones in the military and thank them for their sacrifice. The playing of "Taps" echoed as he placed his hand over his heart and military officers saluted.

Moments later, Trump stopped for a young man who wanted to snap a picture of himself with the president.

In an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos two days after the Khans' speech, Trump played to Muslim stereotypes when he implied Ghazala had not spoken at the DNC because, as a Muslim woman, "she wasn't allowed to have anything to say". "Thank you, God bless your families & God bless the United States of America!"
