Dalits given soap and asked to clean up before Yogi Adityanath's visit

Dalits given soap and asked to clean up before Yogi Adityanath's visit

Uttar Pradesh police in a report submitted to Ministry of Home Affairs claimed that the situation is under control in the state even though it has requested for 400 anti-riot police personnel.

The state government yesterday suspended the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police because of the continuing violence since April.

Internet and mobile messaging services were also suspended in the district to prevent the spread of rumours which the administration feared could spark further trouble.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called the recent incidents of violence in Saharanpur a "well-planned conspiracy" as the city slowly limped back to normalcy. The State government also said that Chandrashekhar Azad of a local Dalit outfit Bhim Sena would be arrested soon, in association with the violence in the region.

Mayawati, heads India's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), a party that has support base in Uttar Pradesh and following among millions of low-caste Dalits.

The central forces were sent after an initial report to the MHA detailed two deaths and injuries to 40 people in clashes. More than 2,000 members of a community had allegedly gheraoed a village in Saharanpur earlier this month, and set fire to more than two dozen houses belonging to Dalits.

Addressing a press conference, he said that though there had been incidents of violence reported from the district in the last few years, it had not attained the magnitude which was witnessed during the April 20, May 5, May 9 and May 23 clashes.

The district magistrate told that there was no official order for the villagers to clean up and added that a programme was organised to promote cleanliness and stop open-defecation.

Mishra said the situation is likely to become normal in the next 24 hours.

Talking to media persons at Saharanpur this evening, Home Secretary Mani Prasad Misra and ADG Law and Order Aditya Misra said that strict actions will be taken against culprits of violence and arson and innocent people will not be touched.
