PGA Champions Tour 2017

PGA Champions Tour 2017

Bernhard Langer, of Germany, gives a fist pump as he birdie's the ninth hole during the final round of the Senior PGA Championship at the Trump National golf club in Sterling, Va., Sunday, May 28, 2017. Langer also secured his record ninth major championship to move past Jack Nicklaus (8) on senior golf's all-time list.

Bernhard Langer made five straight birdies after the wind died down on a punishing day at Trump National, regaining the lead at the Senior PGA Championship as darkness fell.

He then returned to the PGA Tour, where he continues to play a full schedule, and tied for 16th at The Players Championship. He tied Nicklaus last week with a five-shot victory at the Regions Tradition.

The start was delayed 80 minutes because of overnight rain that saturated President Donald Trump's already-soft course on the shores of the Potomac River, about 25 miles from Washington. Trump, coming off a nine-day trip overseas, did not attend the final round.

Singh (-15) and Langer (-14) will play in the final pairing Sunday, scheduled to tee off at 1:40 p.m. Billy Andrade (-12) and Bob Estes (-10) sit third and fourth, respectively, on the leaderboard.

Even as they were trying to outdo one another, Vijay Singh and Bernhard Langer allowed themselves moments of conversational levity during the third round of the Senior PGA Championship on Saturday, making light of ailments painfully familiar to players on the 50-and-over circuit.

The German closed with a round of 68 to oust the Fijian by one stroke on 18-under par.

"I think what really frustrated him was my putting", Langer said.

Langer missed seven greens in regulation after missing just three greens the first two days, but he scrambled well, getting up and down all but one time.

Standing just off the green to greet Langer was his daughter, Christina, who flew to the tournament from Seattle to surprise her father and watch him win his 32nd event on the Champions Tour.

Singh, Langer, Andrade, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Colin Montgomerie and John Daly were among the notables in the field at the outset. "I knew if I hit it somewhat solid it should land near the hole and it landed perfectly".Much will depend on how the PGA of America decides to set up the Trump Potomic Falls course, a new-built Tom Fazio design that can be played at over 7,600 yards.

"It's not a super long golf course", he said.

Part of a four-way tie for the 36-hole lead, Simpson went ahead alone to stay after consecutive birdies to start his back nine. Langer became the only player to win all five senior majors. He led after three rounds in hard conditions at Oak Hill in 2008, but shot a final-round 76 to lose by one stroke to Jay Haas.

Feng, of China, has six career victories, the most recent at last year's TOTO Japan Classic. To surpass Jack's record of eight majors out here is pretty neat.
