Graham: It's 'stunning' Comey never told Congress about fake email

CNN notes that Comey's decision to announce publicly that the Clinton investigation was over was an "unusual step", and that Comey referenced this intelligence in a classified briefing as the reason for his actions. Sources close to Comey tell CNN he felt that it didn't matter if the information was accurate, because his big fear was that if the Russians released the information publicly, there would be no way for law enforcement and intelligence officials to discredit it without burning intelligence sources and methods.

CNN is reporting that former FBI Director James Comey knew that some information about the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server was created by Russian intelligence, but did not disclose that fact when he declared that the investigation into Clinton's activities was over last summer. On Friday, CNN reported that Comey acted on this document, even though he knew it could be fake.

Graham confirmed Comey told Senate and House select committees on intelligence about the email but he never indicated it was fake.

"The FBI director knew that the information he relied upon to jump into the 2016 election was fake, that he basically took over the Department of Justice's job based on a fake email from the Russians". From a Congress' point of view, he never told us it was fake.

It is not clear why Comey was not honest about the fake nature of the information in classified sessions with lawmakers.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday (24 May) that the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained a document detailing an alleged email from then-Democratic National Committee (DNC) chief Debbie Wasserman Schultz. That public announcement - in which he criticized Clinton and made extensive comments about the evidence - set in motion a chain of other Federal Bureau of Investigation moves that Democrats now say helped Trump win the presidential election.

The Post report said that there were questions about the authenticity of the document, and yet Comey acted on it anyway. The report said the details came from "a dubious Russian document" and that this document influenced Comey's decision to make his thinking on the case public. "I want to get to the bottom of it", he said. "I want to see the email", Graham said.
