Chaffetz doubles down on request for Federal Bureau of Investigation memos

Then-FBI Director James Comey acted on information that he knew was fabricated by Russian intelligence out of concern that a leak of the info could damage the credibility of the probe into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, CNN reported Friday.

Comey's actions based on what he knew was Russian disinformation offer a stark example of the way Russian interference impacted the decisions of the highest-level U.S. officials during the 2016 campaign.

For the full story, see CNN and The Washington Post. Former FBI Director Robert Mueller will oversee the law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between President Trump's campaign and Russian Federation. Trump fired Comey May 9 amid questions about the FBI's investigation, which is now being overseen by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI director. One of those memos described a February Oval Office meeting during which Comey wrote that Trump had nudged him to drop the FBI's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Earlier Thursday, House oversight committee chairman Jason Chaffetz told acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe that he wants records of Comey's contacts with the White House and Justice Department dating to September 2013, when Comey was sworn in as FBI director under President Barack Obama.

In a responding letter, Chaffetz said he still wanted any related documents that would be outside of the scope of the special counsel's investigation, and a list of documents found to be within the scope of the probe, by June 8. "That seemed to make sense to me".

Assistant FBI Director Gregory Brower told Chaffetz the agency will update him as soon as possible.

"In this case, the focus of the Committee's investigation is the independence of the FBI, including conversations between the President and Comey and the process by which Comey was removed from his role as director", added Chaffetz, who will leave the House at the end of next month.
