Trump Defies G7, Refuses To Back Climate Deal After "Controversial" Debate

Cohn said United States compliance with its Paris commitments would be "crippling" to economic growth, but added the president was "leaning to understand the European position".

According to his top economist, Trump has "digested" and learned a lot of information on the issue, and is yet to make up his mind.

The final communique from Taormina could give important pointers on the course of U.S. policy, which has been a puzzle amid mixed signals from Trump on several other fronts, including relations with Russia, Syria, North Korea and Iran.

US President Donald Trump has been urged by the other leaders of the Group of Seven (G-7) countries not to ditch the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change as he promised during his election campaign.

Leaders of the world's major industrialized nations began talks on Friday at a G7 summit in Sicily, Italy, with tough debates on trade and climate change are expected.

President Trump has said he will decide whether to pull the USA out of the Paris climate accord when he returns from his trip.

After visits to Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories, Trump met Pope Francis in Rome on May 24 and held talks May 25 with the heads of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance in Brussels.

In a private meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Trump also denounced the German trade surplus as "very bad" and complained about the large number of German cars being sold in the United States, officials said. French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and British Prime Minister Theresa May will also be attending the elite club for the first time.

G7 leaders on Friday found common cause on combatting terrorism after the bloodshed in Manchester but failed to bridge a gulf between Donald Trump and U.S. partners on trade and climate change.

A French official said it would be "disappointing" if the wording on climate change "is too light in the final statement".

But minutes later, chief economic adviser Gary Cohn told a pool reporter that Trump was critical of Germany.

Mrs May told him that the United Kingdom and the 27 European Union member states should be discussing their future relationship at the same time as discussing the terms of the UK's withdrawal, a Downing Street spokesman said.

It has also enabled Trump to position himself as a more statesmanlike figure and, notably after his meeting with Pope Francis, as a man of peace - stances which European officials hope will edge him towards compromise with partners across a broad range of issues.

"He did say the environment is very, very important".

Mr. Trump wants a firm commitment to fair trade in the final communique but the G7 nations want him to support a trade system in which World Trade Organization rules are honoured "Canada believes very strongly in a rules-based trading order".

"Today G7 leaders have joined Britain in condemning this barbaric act of violence", said British Prime Minister Theresa May, who left the summit a day early to deal with the aftermath of the attack. He came here to get smarter.

But Gentolini and other world leaders weren't just waiting for internal reflection.

The summit began a day after Trump blasted North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies for spending too little on defence and described Germany's trade surplus as "very bad".

"First, by not falling prey to the Canadian temptation to overtly criticize the president (and) secondly, by not holding Canada up as some alternative model or leader of global opposition", he said.

Tusk already met with Trump on Thursday in Brussels, and said that while the two sides did not have a "common position about Russia", they appeared to be on the same page where the Ukrainian conflict was concerned.
