LeBron James Breaks Michael Jordan's Playoff Scoring Record

LeBron James Breaks Michael Jordan's Playoff Scoring Record

LeBron James surpassed Michael Jordan to become the highest points scorer in National Basketball Association play-off history as the Cleveland Cavaliers reached the finals for a third successive year.

The Cleveland Cavaliers pose with their trophy after winning Game 5 of the NBA basketball Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics 135-102, on Thursday, May 25, 2017, in Boston.

"They had multiple people come in and talk to me about what's more important, " Thomas said Friday, a day after the Celtics were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

But he finally conceded in a nod to the significance of the milestone.

"When you're growing up and you're seeing Michael Jordan, it's almost like a god, so I didn't ever believe I could be Mike", James said. The reason Jordan's record was attainable is because the Bulls legend played when the opening round of the playoffs was a best-of-five format and James' opening round has been best-of-seven.

If you don't want to rile up friends and relatives over the long weekend, you might also steer clear of the James-Jordan comparison.

"I'm just proud of the work we've put in from the beginning of the season", Durant said following the sweep of the Spurs. "I wanted to be Mike, so for my name to come up in any discussion with Michael Jordan or Kareem (Abdul Jabbar), it's a wow factor".

James, with three titles, is still chasing Jordan's six. I fell in love with the game because of Mike.

Thomas, who averaged 28.9 points per game during the regular season and 23.3 during the postseason, scored 19 total points in the first two games against Cleveland.

"It has nothing to do with passing him in rings, passing him in points, passing him in MVPs". So the Celtics are definitely behind me in this tough situation, but I mean, nobody's going to feel sorry for me. "It doesn't matter to me".

In addition to leading all scorers he had eight assists and eight rebounds.

He did it with a three-pointer late in the third quarter - the first of a string of three straight from beyond the arc.

All of this is to say that even though James admitted shooting fadeaways as a kid like Mike, and wearing wristbands and leg sleeves and red shoes and short shorts - "so you could see my undershorts underneath" - like Mike, he still has his own legacy.

From trying to emulate Jordan's fadeaway jump shot to copying his uniform quirks, James said, "I did pretty much everything MJ did when I was a kid".

With the unblemished Warriors waiting, James opted to douse them in accolades rather than cast any barbs. Thursday was about James inching closer to Jordan, not the Finals matchup looming out West.
