Donald Trump: Israeli-Palestinian peace deal could spread throughout region

Mr. Trump also met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem.

Previous U.S. presidents have declined to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem as it would provide a powerful symbolic rejection of Palestinian - and Arab - aspirations for their own capital inside a separate state.

Abbas said the Palestinians "are committed to working with [Trump] to reach a historic peace deal between us and Israel". I can tell you also that he is reaching for peace. "Making peace, however, will not be easy".

"And we know that peace is possible if we put aside the pain and disagreements of the past and commit together to finally resolving this crisis", the president said during his first trip to Israel as commander-in-chief.

Still, both sides have to be cautious about how they deal with Kushner.

He also faces mounting difficulties at home, where he is struggling to contain a scandal after firing James Comey as FBI director two weeks ago, and a widening investigation into his administration's connections to Russian Federation.

US President Donald Trump was said to have blazed a new trail between the Arab world and Israel Monday, with his plane believed to be the first to fly directly from Saudi Arabia to the Jewish state.

The last talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, led by former USA secretary of state John Kerry, broke down in April 2014 after around a year of largely fruitless discussion.

Rubio called Trump's trip and call for a peace process a "noble endeavor" that every president has tried for years, and it has never worked because there are too many definitions behind what that peace would involve.

A banner hung in the city said "the city of peace welcomes the man of peace" along with photos of Abbas and Trump. Just as he did not elaborate about the Palestinian right for self-determination, Trump refused to go into the question of recognizing Israel as a Jewish state. He traveled eight km (five miles) south from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, in the occupied West Bank, to see Abbas.

Later Tuesday, Trump will return to Jerusalem to visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and give a speech at the Israel Museum before wrapping up his two-day stop.

When Trump said on Monday, "We're going to get there... eventually".

A cloud hung over preparations for the visit, since less than a week before credible reports suggested that Israel had been the source of the intelligence that Trump passed to Russian Federation.

"Jerusalem is a sacred city. They date back thousands of years", Trump said.

After leaving the Middle East on Tuesday afternoon (Tuesday morning here), Trump is headed to Europe where he is expected to visit Brussels, the headquarters of the European Union (EU).

At the same time, his verbal commitment to tackling arguably the world's most intractable conflict has not been matched by bold ideas or new initiatives.

Abbas said that he had also drawn Trump's attention to more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners who have been on a hunger strike for more than a month, led by Marwan Barghouthi, who supporters call the Palestinian Nelson Mandela.

Trump was considering making that bold announcement during his trip here, but backed off fulfilling that pledge amid a torrent of warnings from USA foreign policy officials and Arab diplomats, who said such a move would hinder peace efforts and set off tensions in the region. Israel defeated the Arab armies then, and again in the Six-Day War of 1967, at which time they annexed East Jerusalem.

Abbas also spoke of Palestinian insistence that all "final status issues" be resolved "based on worldwide law" and United Nations resolutions, as well as the Arab Peace Initiative first offered more than a decade ago. It was more than Netanyahu could have hoped for.
