India to face China in Sudirman Cup badminton quarter-finals

Gold Coast: Spearheaded by Olympic silver-medallist PV Sindhu, India are in for a tough challenge as they seek to end the agonising wait for a medal at the Sudirman Cup mixed team championship beginning here today. Last month, in the Singapore Open, they had stretched the reigning World No 1 pairing of Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi over the full distance before accepting defeat.

Though the women's singles sealed Indonesia's win over Denmark, their knockout fate still depended on the women's doubles in the fifth match of the tie.

Olympic silver medallist Sindhu then saved India some embarrassment with a 21-18, 21-6 win over Line Kjaersfeldt in a 32-minute women's singles match.

"What a insane team match against Indonesia, lasted nearly six hours and we have to dig really deep to win the two matches needed to top the group".

Starting the proceedings, the new pair of Satwiksairaj and Ashwini produced another mind-blowing performance to take out a 22-20, 17-21, 21-19 over Tontowi Ahmad and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in a mixed doubles match that lasted an hour and six minutes. Kidambi Srikanth scored a magnificent 21-15, 21-16 victory over Indonesia's Jonatan Christie, who was preferred to the more experienced Tommy Sugiarto.

And finally the in-form duo of Ashwini/Sikki Reddy made it 4-1 with their wonderful win over Della Haris/Rosyita Putri Sari 21-12, 21-19.

The Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold runners-up made an fantastic start by pocketing the first game following which the Danish team stormed back to force a decider.

Denmark have two world class singles talents in Viktor Axelsen and Jan O Jorgensen, apart from high-class men's doubles specialists like Mathias Boe, Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Carsten Mogensen.

This win has kept the hopes alive for India.

The only area where India failed to make much of an impression on both Monday and Tuesday was in the men's doubles, in which the two combinations that were tried out fell in straight sets to quality opposition - by way of two of the world's top five combinations. They blew away the teenaged Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and then warded them off in the second game for a 21-9, 21-17 triumph.

Group 1 has 12 teams fighting it out for the title.
