Elvis Week to feature concerts, auction, candlelight vigil

Elvis Week to feature concerts, auction, candlelight vigil

GWS Auctions Inc. of California is auctioning off the jet after it sat on a runway in New Mexico for 30 years. But the red 1962 Lockheed Jetstar has no engine and needs a restoration of its cockpit. However, Presley designed the interior himself, which features red velvet seats with a matching shag carpet.

Liveauctioneers.com says the jet was owned by Elvis and his father, Vernon Presley. This time it's likely to actually sell, because unlike the "Hound Dog II" and "Lisa Marie", this plane was privately owned for over 35 years, and "is the only airplane once belonging to Elvis that is still owned privately". It's quite reasonable, given that, as the website emphasizes, the jet "could potentially earn its new owner millions of dollars in exhibit, or entry fees as an attraction".

I happen to know someone that this 1962 Lockheeed Jetstar would be pretty flawless for, although he has temporary use of another jet at the moment.

The auction will feature other celebrity memorabilia including handwritten notes from the Beach Boys and lost photos of late R&B singer Aaliyah.

According to Celebrity Insider, one popular hope is that Priscilla Presley, Elvis' former wife, will buy it and show it in a museum or move it to Graceland.

A total of more than 380 lots were sold at the auction, bringing in almost $3 million.

Presley was born in Tupelo on January 8, 1935, and moved to Memphis with his parents at age 13. Historians say his music also helped usher in the fall of racial segregation. Presley died on August 16, 1977, at age 42.
