Man City beats Leicester 2-1 after bizarre penalty incident

City's victory over Leicester, coupled with United's defeat at Tottenham, means that Pep Guardiola's side are guaranteed to end the campaign ahead of Jose Mourinho's side.

It keeps their top four hopes well intact, thanks to goals from David Silva and Gabriel Jesus.

City climbed above Liverpool to third place and moved six points clear of fifth-place Arsenal, who visit Stoke City later on Saturday.

There was a large element of doubt about City's opener, Sterling possibly getting the slightest of touches on Silva's goalbound shot but in an offside position.

MANCHESTER - Pep Guardiola says he needs the Manchester City fans to make Tuesday night's game against West Bromwich Albion a big night as they try to secure Champions League football.

In the battle for south coast bragging rights Southampton beat Middlesbrough 2-1 on Saturday with goals by Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond keeping them above Bournemouth who beat Burnley 2-1 thanks to Joshua King's late victor.

A similar incident occurred in the Champions League semi-final second leg between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, although Antoine Griezmann's goal was allowed to stand in that instance.

Strangest of all, there was the equaliser that was not, the moment when Riyad Mahrez started to celebrate only for Bobby Madley to award a free kick to Manchester City.

Mahrez beat Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero with 13 minutes remaining but had slipped in his run-up and inadvertently struck the ball twice, once with each foot, to send it spinning into the net.

"I read a lot of stories about a new City contract but I know nothing about this".

In the absence of the injured Robert Huth and Wes Morgan, Yohan Benalouane was Leicester's only specialist centre-back and proved an inadequate deputy. There's been times throughout the season when I felt we deserved more but didn't get any luck.

"The first goal was offside", Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel, who argued he was distracted by Sterling, told Sky Sports.

"We need one more game to be in the top four, but it's in our hands", Guardiola said.

Pablo Zabaleta will get one after it was confirmed last week that he will be leaving when his contract expires this summer, but the wait goes on for Toure and several other first-team players who are waiting to see where their respective futures lie.

He is also fast closing in on 300 appearances, although that landmark will have to wait until next season as City have just two games left to take in this term.
