Former CIA head to answer questions about Russian meddling

Chaffetz had invited Comey to speak at Wednesday's hearing. A subpoena from the Senate intelligence committee requests a list of all contacts between Flynn and Russian officials over an 18-month period.

The ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is asking the panel's top lawmaker to use his subpoena power to ask the White House for documents related to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. They said they will "vigorously pursue General Flynn's testimony and his production of any and all pertinent materials pursuant to the Committee's authorities".

That's relevant because Chaffetz put blame on the Obama administration for failing to properly vet Flynn back in 2016, rather than President Donald Trump or the current administration. In addition to the Senate investigation, Flynn is also being investigated by other congressional committees, as well as the ongoing FBI counterintelligence probe and a separate federal criminal investigation in northern Virginia.

Also Monday, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said documents already in the House Oversight Committee's possession appear to indicate that Flynn may have lied to investigators previous year when they were conducting a background check for his top-level security clearance.

Adding to his woes, a Democratic lawmaker said Monday that Flynn may have lied to federal investigators when he told the Pentagon during a security review that he was paid $33,750 by a USA company for making a speech in Moscow in December 2015, shortly before he began advising Trump's presidential campaign.

But RT News, Russia's television network, reportedly funded Flynn's trip with $45,000 to attend a gala in Moscow and give a speech.

She says she and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa have sent requests to the White House, FBI and Defense Department "for memos, recordings, notes and other documents". Flynn's lawyers claimed an "escalating public frenzy" against the former aide justified declining the subpoena for his records. The former national security adviser will invoke his Fifth Amendment protection against se.

Mr. Brennan's testimony before the House intelligence committee on Tuesday comes one day after Mr. Flynn invoked his constitutional right against self-incrimination in response to a subpoena from the Senate intelligence committee.

Those inquiries are looking into whether anyone close to Mr Trump helped Russian Federation interfere in the United States election to hurt Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and ultimately help Mr Trump, and whether any crimes were committed.

The retired lieutenant general is a key witness in the Russian Federation probe.

"If you're innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?". "We need facts, not speculation & anonymous sources". Richard Burr of North Carolina and Democratic Sen.

That's according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

The former CIA chief also told the House intelligence committee that he had become so concerned about Russian interference - and contacts between Americans "involved" with the Trump campaign and the Russians - that he convened a group of officials from the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency in late July to focus exclusively on the issue.
