Election campaigning suspended after Manchester attack

That's the first public reaction from Ariana Grande to the explosion outside of her concert in Manchester, England Monday night.

Initial evidence at the scene suggested the attack may have been a suicide bombing, said two USA security officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

Parents posted pictures of missing children on social media, pleading for information. Twitter and Facebook were filled with appeals for the missing.

"We are working to establish the full details of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack".

A police helicopter hummed over the city as somber commuters hurried to work.

"Broken. From the bottom of my heart, I am so so sorry".

Later at a press conference, Chief Constable Ian Hopkins of the Greater Manchester Police confirmed the explosion was being investigated as an act of terror, and that police had identified a suspect.

He said the blast was by the foyer door, next to the merchandise, and that glass and metal nuts were left on the floor. "It was nearly like they waited for her to go". Please stay away from the area. "What should have been a superb evening is now just disgusting".

Following the attack, British Prime Minister Theresa May has suspended her General Election campaign.

There was mass panic after the explosion at the end of the concert, which was part of Grande's The Dangerous Woman Tour. "Police cars were everywhere".

Trudeau said he was "devastated" when he heard about the "innocent victims who were killed or injured. many of them far too young".

"A huge bomb-like bang went off that hugely panicked everyone and we were all trying to flee the arena", he said. "It was chaotic. Everybody was running and screaming and just trying to get out".

Manchester Arena, the largest indoor arena in Europe, opened in 1995 and is a popular concert and sporting venue.

He said on Twitter that his girlfriend was in the arena with a friend, but was unharmed.

Among the names being circulated was Olivia Campbell. As one source said, she's incapable of performing for anyone. He is hospitalized but Olivia is missing, the mother told ITV television's Good Morning Britain breakfast show.

"Luckily they weren't there, I managed to find them outside the arena and got them back to the hotel".

Ivo Delgado, a witness, told CNN he heard one explosion.

"If anyone sees Olivia, lend her your phone, she knows my number". It was not immediately clear whether those concerts would go forward following Monday's attack. Supporters of the extremist Islamic State group, which holds territory in Iraq's Mosul and around its de facto capital in the Syrian city of Raqqa, celebrated the blast online.

"At this time, we have no information to indicate a specific credible threat involving music venues in the United States", the department said in a statement.

"This wicked ideology must be obliterated. And I mean completely obliterated", he added.

If confirmed, it would be the deadliest militant assault in Britain since four British Muslims killed 52 people in suicide bombings on London's transport system in July 2005.

Video from inside the arena showed concertgoers screaming as they made their way out amid a sea of pink balloons.

Grande's role as Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon's high school sitcom "Victorious" propelled her to teen idol status, starting in 2010. She was scheduled to perform in England, Belgium, Poland, Germany and Switzerland.

Pop concerts and nightclubs have been a terrorism target before.

Many of those attending the concert were teenagers venturing to their first concert.

In Turkey, 39 people died when a gunman attacked New Year's revelers at the Reina nightclub in Istanbul. Those attacks killed 130 people, including dozens trapped inside an Eagles of Death Metal concert in the Bataclan theatre.

Katz and Lawless reported from London.

Greater Manchester Police said they were called to the venue at around 10.33pm and approach roads were closed.
