Hinting at secret tapes, Trump warns ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Hinting at secret tapes, Trump warns ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation director

After he fired FBI Director James Comey on May 9, US President Donald Trump on Friday warned the latter not to talk to media.

"President Trump's statements, together with the reported statements of other senior officials, indicate that the decision to fire Director Comey was made in connection [to that inquiry]", CREW wrote in a letter to Rosenstein.

Former FBI Director James Comey will not testify before the Senate intelligence committee next week, according to the panel's vice chairman, Democratic Sen.

Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One, he said "We can make a fast decision".

Asking such a question "would come close to bribery. or at least obstruction of justice, which Comey would've had to be an idiot to fall for by offering the assurance sought", Tribe said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed the report and said the president would "never even suggest the expectation of personal loyalty".

Comey did not confirmed Trump's account of the meetings.

Trump sent Friday's threat as part of a small rant about the press and the investigation into ties between his campaign and Russian Federation.

Trump also suggested that he may bring to an end the White House press briefings, hinting that he doesn't completely trust his staff to convey his messaging accurately.

Why did the president seek assurances from Comey that he was not a target of the FBI's ongoing investigation into Russia's interference with the 2016 election? Federal law and the law in New York State do not require both parties on a call to be aware that it was being recorded.

"If the president has "tapes" of his conversations with Director Comey, it is because the president himself made them". Later in the dinner, Trump again said to Comey that he needed his loyalty. Bob Casey (D-PA). "If the replacement for Director Comey isn't 100 percent unassailable ... then I think they're going to have credibility problems".

In her most extensive remarks since the divisive presidential election, Clinton says that Comey's email probe announcement in October contributed to her election defeat.

Noted legal scholar Laurence Tribe told AFP that if Comey did indeed answer Trump's question, it would violate Department of Justice rules and "would be unthinkably unethical and unprofessional in this situation".

A White House spokeswoman on Thursday disputed the description of the dinner by Comey's associates.

Trump said Tuesday he had fired Comey on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, saying he was unable to lead the Bureau effectively. "In fact, when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story", Trump said.
