Congress committee members will 'demand' to see Comey's notes

Congress committee members will 'demand' to see Comey's notes

Burr was joined in the statement by committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.). "Given his commitment to the people and the mission of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, we expected him to be responsive to the senators responsible for vetting its next proposed leader".

Mueller's former law firm, WilmerHale, represents Kushner - who has been in the spotlight over the president's decision to fire James Comey from the FBI and for meeting with Russian officials - and Manafort, who is now under federal investigation.

"The Committee looks forward to receiving testimony from the former Director on his role in the development of the Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 USA elections, and I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media", Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement released Friday evening.

Comey has claimed to have notes of all his meetings with the president including one in which he says Trump - having cleared the Oval Office of all other staff - told him not to pursue an investigation into Mike Flynn, the National Security Adviser being probed for links to Russian Federation. "Moreover, the White House has not ruled out the possibility of using the rule to challenge Mueller's findings in court, should the investigation lead to prosecution". In the Oval Office weeks later, Comey told associates, the president asked him to shut down an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. "The really goal of the conversation was to confront Russian Federation on areas, as I mentioned, like Ukraine and Syria, their support for Assad, and their support for the Iranians". The alleged conversations were intercepted by US intelligence officials, according to CNN.

The White House on Friday predicted that the investigation would back up Trump's account.

It cited current and former administration officials as saying U.S. intelligence officials were so concerned about the conversations between Flynn and the Russians that they would limit how much sensitive information they shared with him.

White House officials have said that the May 10 White House meeting among Trump, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak was a chance to discuss several issues.

"By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia's actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russia", Spicer said.

It was reported in January that Flynn is the subject of an FBI investigation, due to his alleged ties to the Russian government, and the New York Times reported on Wednesday that Trump's transition team knew Flynn was being investigated by federal officials when the president appointed him to serve as National Security Advisor.
