Red-hot Sogard guides Brewers past Padres

Red-hot Sogard guides Brewers past Padres

Chicago's Eddie Butler lasted three-plus innings in his second start of the season, allowing two runs, three hits and five walks.

Called up a week ago as the Brewers dealt with a rash of injuries, Sogard has simply been red-hot, batting.588 with a pair of homers and seven RBI, sporting an on-base percentage of.682.

Then Sogard went insane on Thursday, singling his first three at-bats and driving in the Brewers' first run before hitting his game-changing, two-RBI double to center in the seventh.

Jarred Cosart, making his first start for the Padres since going on the disabled list April 19 with a right hamstring strain, allowed one run on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts over five innings. It's been a great series for the former Padres farmhand who finished with a career tying four hits again on Thursday. Padres manager Andy Green said Rule 5 rookie C Luis Torrens, 21, is the Padres' primary backup to Austin Hedges.

Sogard said he couldn't ever remember feeling this good at the plate at any time during his previous 435-game stint with the Oakland A's.

He homered again on Monday, giving the Brewers a lead against the Padres in the 10th inning before Hunter Renfroe hit a dinger to walk off for San Diego. Orlando Arcia also had a RBI in the ninth inning, his 16th, to polish the game off.

Sogard looks like an accountant with his wide glasses but he was money for the Brewers over four games.

Manager Craig Counsell made the announcement Friday before Milwaukee's series opener at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. Milwaukee is a full game up on the second-place Cardinals and two games up on the Cubs in the Central.

Chicago outscored Cincinnati 25-15 in the series and has 23 wins in its last 28 games against the Reds. "It's contributions from a lot of different guys".

Zach Davies (4-2, 5.80) pitches the series finale for the Brewers today. Sanchez is starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso this weekend.

Padres: RHP Jered Weaver (0-4, 6.05) is to start at home Friday against Arizona.
